Hvordan ville du laget en film fra et stykke sakprosa, som i seg selv har opphav i en nyhetssak om en hagearbeiders ulovlige innsaking av orkidéer? Og hvordan da, ville du håndtert denne tolkningen dersom du tilfeldigvis befant deg i Charlie Kaufmans vakre, nevrotiske sinn? Spike Jonze svarer vakkert på disse spørsmålene i sin 2002 film Adaptation.

Tolkning er i seg selv et veldig interessant emne; hvordan kan man oversette idéer fra et medium til et annet? Noe blir nødvendigvis tapt i overgangen fra skriftlig ord til film. Burde man prøve å rette for feilen med virkemidlene til det nye mediet? Det er vel det som er tolkning, er det ikke? Hvor langt kan man strekke seg fra det man skal tolke? Dette er et uhorvelig interessant emne, som bare forsterkes gjennom Kaufman.

How would you go about adapting a non-fiction book, based on a news-article about a horticulturalist, and his poaching of orchids? Now how would you go about doing this if you happen to be stuck in the neurotic, beautiful mind of Charlie Kaufman? Spike Jonze’ 2002 film Adapation answers these questions beautifully, in a film that could not come from any other mind than Charlie Kaufmans.

Adaptation is in itself such an interesting topic — how do you translate ideas from one medium to another? Necessarily, there will be something lost in the transition from written words to film. Should you correct with the parameters of the new medium? That is adaptation, isn’t it? How far can you remove yourself from what you’re adapting? It is an interesting topic only made more so filtering it through Kaufman.
