Storytelling (2001) – 35mm
Storytelling is a provocative and thought-provoking film paralleling two writers’ journies: one a fiction author and the other a non-fiction storyteller.
Todd Solondz, an American director and screenwriter known for creating films of the dark comedy genre brings us Storytelling, a two-part story following a creative writer and a documentarian.
The first part follows the creative writer as she navigates sex and exploitation with an unexpected partner. The second part follows an aspiring documentarian as he explores dysfunction in a suburban family.
Solondz isn’t afraid to explore dark and sometimes twisted themes in his work, and this film is representative of that. A film that shocks, provokes laughter, and inspires reflection is his specialty, and this film accomplishes all three.
This film was nominated at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001.
