A slice-of-life film written by Paul Auster, Smoke is about five neighbors one summer in Brooklyn.

Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) owns a tobacco shop, and has been taking same picture of the building once a day for 14 years. The bizarre story of how he got to his camera and why he decided his unique collection of photographs will finally give an idea to struggling novelist Paul Benjamin (William Hurt). Meanwhile, Paul becomes entangled with Rashid (Harold Perrineaud Jr.), a disoriented black teenager looking for his father.
