Coen-brødrenes 35 år lange reise gjennom et USA befolket av tapere, outsidere og andre mistilpassede begynner med denne splatter-inspirerte neo-noiren. Filmens tonefall kan best beskrives med Detective Vissers ord: «Now I don’t care if you’re the Pope of Rome, President of the United States or Man of the Year; somethin’ can all go wrong. […] Now, in Russia, they got it mapped out so that everyone pulls for everyone else… that’s the theory anyway, but what I know about is Texas, an’ down here… you’re on your own.» Blood Simple, som også er Frances McDormand debut på lerretet setter startskuddet for et langt og fruktbart samarbeid mellom henne selv og Coen-brødrene.

Blood Simple, the Coen brothers’ debut feature and Frances McDormand’s screen debut, marks the beginning of their long and fruitful cooperation. Taking it’s cues from the noir tradition, but also from splatters, the seeds of what is to come are already apparent in this first outing.
